How to play

Numbered tiles appear across the grid. Take a moment to memorise where each number is located.

As soon as you tap 1, all other numbers turn into blank tiles. Tap the remaining tiles in ascending order:2, 3, 4, and so on.

Each successful round adds another number to the board. You have 3 strikes before the test concludes.

Step-by-Step Game Guide

  1. Memorise Number Locations

When the level begins, inspect the grid and commit the positions of all numbered tiles to memory.

  2. Tap Tile 1 to Hide Numbers

Tapping tile 1 immediately masks all remaining numbers into blank tiles.

  3. Recall the Ascending Sequence

Tap the blank tiles in numerical order (2, then 3, then 4, etc.) purely from memory.

  4. Advance and Benchmark

Each cleared level adds another number to the grid. Three mistakes conclude the test.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Chimp Test?

The Chimp Test is a benchmark of spatial working memory inspired by research at Kyoto University. In 2007, a young chimpanzee named Ayumu demonstrated the ability to recall the exact spatial locations of 1 to 9 after seeing them for just a fraction of a second, outperforming adult humans.

Why do chimpanzees outperform humans on this test?

Researchers like Dr Tetsuro Matsuzawa hypothesise a cognitive trade-off: humans traded rapid eidetic (photographic) spatial memory for language and symbolic representation, whereas primates retained extraordinary instant spatial recall for navigating complex arboreal environments.

What is an average human score on the Chimp Test?

Most adult humans reliably recall 5 to 7 numbers. Scores of 9 or more match the primate benchmark, while 12 or more indicate exceptional visual working memory capacity.

How do the strikes and levels work?

You begin at Level 1 with 4 numbers. Each level you clear adds 1 additional number. You are allowed 3 strikes before your run completes and your highest number count is benchmarked.

Can you improve your Chimp Test score with practice?

Yes. Regular practice trains spatial chunking (grouping numbers by geometric shapes or quadrants) and strengthens attentional focus, allowing players to expand their working memory span.
