Reflex benchmark · 5 rounds

Reaction Time Test

Test your reflex speed across five rounds. Keep your focus sharp and react when the screen turns green.

Reaction Time Test

When you press Start, wait for the screen to turn green, then click or press Space/Enter as fast as you can.

Press Start to begin the reaction time test.

How to play

When the test begins, the screen turns red with Wait for green….

As soon as it turns green with GO!, click, tap, or pressSpace or Enter as quickly as possible.

If you click too soon, it counts as a false start and the round must be retried without affecting your score.

Complete all five rounds to calculate your average reaction time, best individual round, and local personal best.

Step-by-Step Test Guide

  1. Start the Challenge

Click or tap the Start button to begin round 1 of 5. The stage turns red with a "Wait for green…" prompt.

  2. Hold Your Focus

Keep your finger positioned over your mouse button, touchscreen, or Space key while waiting for a randomised 1.5 to 4.5 second delay.

  3. React on Green

The instant the screen flashes vibrant green with "GO!", click, tap, or press Space/Enter as quickly as possible.

  4. Review and Repeat

Check your measured round time. If you click early, retry the round without penalty. Complete all five rounds to calculate your final average.

Human Reaction Time Benchmarks & Physiology

Human visual reaction time is the total duration required for light photons to hit retinal photoreceptors, travel along the optic nerve to the primary visual cortex, undergo motor planning in the frontal lobe, and trigger muscle motor unit contractions in your finger:

  • Elite / Professional Gamers & Athletes: Under 180 ms (< 0.18 s)
  • Fast / Above Average: 180 ms – 215 ms (0.18 – 0.215 s)
  • Median Human Baseline: 215 ms – 250 ms (0.215 – 0.25 s)
  • Slower / Fatigued: Above 250 ms (> 0.25 s)

Biological factors including circadian rhythm, hydration, and short-term cognitive arousal all modulate synaptic transmission velocity.

Hardware & Input Latency Factors

Your recorded test score reflects both biological neural processing and your electronic hardware pipeline:

  • Display Refresh Rate: A 60Hz screen presents new video frames every 16.7ms, introducing up to 16.7ms of input display lag. High-refresh displays (144Hz, 240Hz, 360Hz) reduce this interval to 6.9ms, 4.2ms, and 2.8ms respectively.
  • Input Device Polling: A gaming mouse with a 1,000Hz USB polling rate registers clicks in 1ms, whereas standard 125Hz office peripherals add 8ms of USB polling delay. Bluetooth connections add 10–30ms of wireless jitter.
  • Browser Compositor Pipeline: Modern desktop browsers process high-priority click events with sub-millisecond overhead, but heavy background tabs or power-saving modes can introduce micro-stutters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average human visual reaction time?
The typical human visual reaction time is between 200 and 250 milliseconds (0.20–0.25 seconds). Well-trained esports competitors and track athletes often achieve 150 to 190 milliseconds.
Why is auditory reaction time faster than visual reaction time?
Auditory stimuli reach the brain in approximately 8–10 milliseconds via the auditory nerve, whereas visual photoreceptors in the retina require 20–40 milliseconds to transduce photons into electrical signals.
How does hardware and screen latency affect reaction test scores?
Display refresh rates (e.g. 60Hz adds up to 16.7ms frame delay vs 6.9ms at 144Hz), peripheral polling rates, and wireless Bluetooth latency can add 15 to 50 milliseconds of artificial delay to raw measurements.
How do age and fatigue influence reflex speed?
Human reaction times typically peak in the early twenties and gradually slow by 2–6 milliseconds per decade. Sleep deprivation, dehydration, and mental fatigue can impair reflex speed by 10–25%.
How do I get the most accurate reaction time measurement?
Use a wired mouse or keyboard, position yourself comfortably, focus your eyes on the centre of the stage, eliminate background computer tasks, and complete all five rounds in one sitting.
