12-Tone Equal Temperament (12-TET) Acoustics

Western musical tuning divides each octave into 12 logarithmic semitones where the frequency ratio between adjacent semitones is exactly 21/12 ≈ 1.059463:

  • Concert Pitch Standard: Standard A4 is defined as exactly 440.00 Hz.
  • Octave Frequency Doubling: An octave leap doubles the fundamental frequency (e.g. A3 = 220 Hz, A4 = 440 Hz, A5 = 880 Hz).
  • Equal Step Ratio: Every semitone interval has an identical exponential frequency multiplier, allowing instruments to modulate freely between all 12 keys.

Interval & Chord Recognition Techniques

Associating musical intervals with iconic melodic motifs accelerates auditory recognition:

  • Minor 3rd (3 semitones): Sad, bluesy quality; opening notes of classic lullabies (e.g. Greensleeves).
  • Major 3rd (4 semitones): Bright, triumphant opening of Kumbaya or the first two notes of When the Saints Go Marching In.
  • Perfect 4th (5 semitones): Majestic call; opening interval of Amazing Grace and Here Comes the Bride.
  • Perfect 5th (7 semitones): Open, powerful consonant resonance; opening horn fanfare of Star Wars main theme.
  • Octave (12 semitones): Harmonic unison at double the frequency; opening leap of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is audio synthesised in the Musical Ear Challenge?
Tones are synthesised dynamically in real time via the Web Audio API using pure oscillator sine waves tuned to the standard 12-tone equal temperament (12-TET) scale with A4 = 440 Hz, requiring zero external sound files.
What is the difference between major and minor chords?
A major triad consists of a root, a major third (4 semitones), and a perfect fifth (7 semitones), creating a bright, harmonic quality. A minor triad lowers the third to a minor third (3 semitones), producing a darker, melancholic timbre.
Can relative pitch and ear training be learned by beginners?
Yes. Unlike absolute (perfect) pitch which is rarely acquired in adulthood, relative pitch—the ability to identify intervals, chords, and relative note distances—improves rapidly with daily structured practice.
What is the mathematical frequency formula for 12-TET notes?
In 12-TET equal temperament tuning, the frequency f of any MIDI note number n is calculated by f = 440 * 2^((n - 69) / 12) Hz, where A4 is MIDI note 69 at exactly 440 Hz.
Can I replay the audio cue if I missed it?
Yes, you can click the Replay button or press the R key on your keyboard at any time during a round to listen to the audio prompt again.
